Suomalainen lyhentymä Basiliuksesta, Suomen almanakassa 1929-49 24.10. ja vuodesta 1950 vanhana Basiliuksen päivänä 30.5. Suomen ortodoksinen kalenteri yhdistää Pasin nimiin Basileios ja Basiliskos.
Basilius (=kuninkaallinen), rinnakkainen kirjoitusasu Basileus, on ainakin 13 pyhimyksen nimi. Tunnetuin heistä on kirkonisä Basilius Suuri Vähän-Aasian Kappadokiasta (k.379). Hän toimi ensin asianajajana, mutta syventyi kasteensa jälkeen erakko- ja munkkielämään. Hänen laatimansa on itäisen kirkon merkittävin luostarisääntö. Myöhemmin hänet vihittiin papiksi ja vuonna 370 Kesarean piispaksi. Hänellä on myös huomattava vaikutus kolminaisuusopin hiomiseen siihen muotoon, jonka se sai Konstantinopolin kirkolliskokouksessa vuonna 381 ja Nikean-Konstantinopolin uskontunnustuksessa.
Nimen tavallinen lyhennelmä eri maissa Basil, joka voi kuitenkin tulla muistakin samoin alkavista nimistä. (esim Basilides, Basiliscus) Venäläinen muunnos on Vasili.

Virosta Inkerin kautta Kalevalaan tullut nimi, joka on mahdolisesti syntynyt kulta-sanasta. koillis-Virossa on kerrottu, että Kulta-neidon takoi "Kuller Kalevipoeg, Nalleer naesopoeg". Kalevalassa Kullervo Kalervonpoika on traaginen hahmo, kovan onnen arkkityyppi. Kalevalan lisäksi nimeä ovat tehneet tunnetuksi Aleksis Kivi ja J.H. Erkko Kullervonäytelmillään.
